The Blue Rose

The blue rose. It does not occur naturally in the world. Because it cannot be found in nature, the blue rose has long been a symbol of mystery, of the unattainable, the enigmatic and the inexplicable. The blue rose is wonderful, unique, magical.

In 1840 the horticultural societies of Britain and Belgium offered a prize of 500,000 francs to the first person who could produce a blue rose. The efforts of over 160 years of breeding by expert horticulturalists have not been able to produce a blue rose.

But today that prize is almost--although still not quite--claimable. Biotechnologists have had to think outside the box to do what nature couldn’t do on its own. After 16 years of painstaking work they have created a mauve rose that has the genetic material to produce a truly blue rose. To do so, they had to eliminate the gene for shades of red from the rose and replace it with another, blue-producing, gene. As long as the old gene was present a blue rose could not be created.

The moral of the story? The seemingly unattainable may become reality if you are willing to apply creativity, time, and effort to finding the right solution, and if you are willing to give up something to make room for what you want.

What does the blue rose have to do with healing? I think by now you can probably see where I’m going with this. If you are suffering from a condition of mind, body, or spirit that is dragging you down and holding you back from being the person you want to be, do not be discouraged. You may be able to find your own mysterious blue rose.

The seemingly impossible may indeed be achievable if you, too, are willing to work for the solution. Relief from troubling symptoms often requires creativity, the willingness to sacrifice, and the willingness to persevere, trusting that the health you desire is within your reach. Perhaps there is a blue rose in your future. Although I can make no guarantees, miracles can happen.
